Alex Consani becomes first trans woman to win Model Of The Year

Consani has won 2024’s Model of the Year at the British Fashion Council’s Fashion Awards, becoming the first transgender woman to do so.

American model Alex Consani continues to make history.  
She has already become the youngest signed transgender model, securing a contract with IMG Models, and became the first trans model to become a Victoria’s Secret Angel in 2023. Last October, both Consani and Valentina Sampaio made history by becoming the first trans models to appear on the runway at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. 
Now, Consani has won 2024’s Model of the Year at the British Fashion Council’s Fashion Awards, becoming the first transgender woman not only to be nominated but to win the prestigious award. 
The event took place at the Royal Albert Hall in London, with Model of the Year recognizing “the global impact of a model who, over the [past] 12 months, has dominated the industry, with an influence that transcends the catwalk.”
It’s safe to say that Consani has done just that, as the 21-year-old has made her mark on the catwalk, having secured campaigns and runway shows with the likes of Victoria’s Secret, Chanel, Stella McCartney, Burberry, and Jacquemus, but also expanded views on the modelling profession.
She has done this in part through her TikTok account @captincroook, with more than four million subscribers, which features NSFW content, as well as a refreshing amount of candid shots and videos revealing the behind-the-scenes life as one of the most in-demand models in the world.
Oh, and she starred in Charli XCX’s ‘360’ music video, off of the album ‘Brat’ – one of our favourite albums of the year and the spark for an entire movement this year.
“I’m the first trans woman to win this award!” she exclaimed in her speech. “But I can’t accept this award without thanking those who came before me, specifically the Black trans women who really fought for the space I’m in today – Dominique Jackson, Connie Fleming, Aaron Rose Phillips and countless more who fought for the space that allowed me to flourish today.”
She also thanked her parents for supporting her and encouraged other parents of trans kids to support them.
“Now, more than ever, it’s an important conversation that should be had about how to truly support and uplift one another within this industry, especially those who have been made to feel insignificant,” she added.
“Change is more than possible – it’s needed,” she concluded.
As you can imagine, Consani’s historic win has caused outcry online, with transphobes taking to their devices and rage posting.
We won’t dignify these reactions by re-publishing them, but you can imagine the level of bile and hatred.
Filtering the hateful noise, all that’s left to say is congratulations, with the hope that attitudes and mindsets follow in the example of this historic moment in the world of fashion.
